Azulejo Study: Form, Pattern, Repeat (2017)

Exploration of shape, colour and pattern, and the relationship between each. Inspired by a trip to Lisbon and the beautiful pastel architecture, streets adorned with traditional azulejos (tiles) and organic patterns found in the sunset skylines.
A photograph of the early Lisbon sunrise. The colours in this photograph are what inspired the entire project.
"Triangle Array" - Photocopies of previous sketches used to collage with, with French knots.
"Triangle Array" close up.
"Splosh" - Acrylic paint on tracing paper with collage. Playing with shape and colour contrast.
"Jigsaw" - Acrylic paint and Sharpie on tracing paper.
"Swish Cheese" - Embroidery on tracing paper exploring movement.
"Impending Triangles" - Embroidery on tracing paper and card. I used a small sponge to create the dot effect on the background.
"Shadows and Form" - Embroidery on card exploring block shapes and silhouettes.
"Cascading Triangles" - Collage and embroidery.
"Big Jumble of Triangles" - Embroidery on card.
"Prisms" - Embroidery floss wrapped around nails hammered into cork board.
